Remote hosts
Panes on your servers that feel like panes on your Mac.
A tab on a remote host works just like a local one: ⌘D splits stay on the same machine, agent status shows in the sidebar, the chat view works, scrolling and ⌘F are instant, and the session survives ⌘Q and dropped connections. Seedmux reconnects on its own.
There are two ways to bring a machine in.
Over SSH
For servers you can already ssh into.
- Open Settings › Remote Hosts.
- Click Import from SSH Config to pick hosts from your
~/.ssh/config, or Add Host… to enter one by hand — name, address, user, port, key, and a jump host or SOCKS proxy if you need one. - Click Check & Set Up. Seedmux checks the connection and installs what it needs on the server. Your SSH keys and settings stay yours; Seedmux uses them as they are.
Then click + next to a space name › New Tab on Host ▸.
The list shows each host's state at a glance — online, offline and when it will retry — and how many agent sessions it has and how many are waiting for you.
By pairing — no SSH needed
For machines you can't reach over SSH: a sandbox, a container, a Mac mini behind someone else's router.
- On that machine, install Seedmux:sh
curl -fsSL https://github.com/wishworldbetter/seedmux/releases/latest/download/install-linux.sh | sh - Run
smx pairthere. It prints pairing text. - On your Mac: Settings › Remote Hosts › Pair Host…, paste the text.
Paired hosts connect directly when they can (same network, or the same Tailscale network) and through the relay otherwise. Each paired host can use the official relay, your own relay, or no relay at all — change it from your Mac, no need to visit the machine.
Seedmux notices quickly when a paired machine goes to sleep or disappears, marks it offline, and reconnects every tab when it's back.
Staying up to date
Linux hosts update themselves in the background a few hours after a release. Agents running there aren't interrupted. To turn this off, add auto_update = false to ~/.seedmux/smx.toml on that host.
On your iPhone too
Every host your Mac knows about appears on your phone as well, and their sessions show up alongside your Mac's. See Connect your phone.
